Wisdom Teeth Removal

Wisdom Teeth are the very last teeth to emerge into the mouth from the gums. They may need to be removed due to pain, infection or an unfavoured position in the mouth.

Wisdom-Teeth-emerging

Although your wisdom teeth can grow directly straight, impaction can occur. Impaction is where the teeth either grow at an angle or are trapped in the jawbone and cannot safely or comfortably erupt.

The three types of impactions are:

  • Soft Tissue Impaction – There isn’t enough space in the mouth for the tooth to grow in while still being able to maintain the oral health of the patient. Generally, the tooth comes straight up and out of the gums.

  • Partial Bony Impaction – This impaction has enough space for the tooth to grow but still not enough room to maintain proper oral hygiene. You can see the tooth coming up out of the gum on an angle, usually growing into another tooth.

  • Complete Bony Impaction – Occurs when there is no space for the tooth to grow in and the tooth comes in sideways. The Complete Bony Impaction is more difficult to remove and requires a more complex surgery.

In all three impactions, Dr. Lobb will create incisions in the gums to expose the tooth and either the mandible (lower jawbone) or the maxilla (upper jawbone) depending on what tool should be removed.

For Wisdom Teeth Removal, the patient will be sedated through Intravenous (IV).
